Ancient Roman Music

Ancient Roman music is the reconstructed music of Roman antiquity and, in modern usage, the historically informed revival that performs it. Almost no Roman notation survives, so ensembles rebuild the sound world of the tibia double-pipe, the long war trumpet tuba, the water organ hydraulis, lyre, cithara and frame drums from iconography, surviving instruments and Greek theoretical writings. Groups such as Italy's *Synaulia*, founded by archaeologist and musician *Walter Maioli*, and *Ludi Scaenici* research and record this repertoire, presenting the music of Roman theatre, ritual, banquet and military life.
