Andalusian Nubah

Originating in medieval Al-Andalus, the Andalusian Nubah is a sophisticated classical music suite that forms the bedrock of Maghrebi art music. It is structured as a sequence of instrumental and vocal pieces, all unified by a specific melodic mode (tab'). Its texture is primarily heterophonic, woven from the intricate lines of the oud, rebab, and qanun, supported by subtle percussion. The Nubah's ethos is one of refined poetic expression, setting classical Arabic poetry (muwashshah) to music. After its transmission to North Africa, it became a preserved cultural treasure, embodying a continuous tradition of performance and scholarship.
