Asturian Folk Music

Asturian folk music is the traditional music of Asturias in northern Spain, centered on the gaita asturiana bagpipe, the tambor drum, frame drums and the tonada, a demanding free-rhythm sung style. Rooted in Celtic-Atlantic exchange with Brittany, Ireland and Galicia, it survived Franco-era folklore pageantry to be rebuilt by bands like *Llan de Cubel*, whose albums from "Deva" onward married archival repertoire to rock instrumentation. *Hevia* carried the gaita worldwide on "Tierra de Nadie", proving the tradition could fill arenas without losing its local language.
