Auvergnat folk music

Auvergnat folk music

Auvergnat folk music is the traditional music of the Auvergne region in south-central France, built around the cabrette bagpipe, hurdy-gurdy, fiddle and accordion. Its core repertory is dance music, above all the bourr茅e in triple time, alongside slow regrets, shepherds' ballero calls and narrative songs in the Auvergnat dialect of Occitan. Masters such as *Martin Cayla* and *Antoine Bouscatel* carried the tradition to Paris with the Auvergnat diaspora, feeding the bal-musette scene, while *Joseph Canteloube* preserved its songs in his celebrated "Chants d'Auvergne" arrangements.
