Azmari

Originating with the itinerant minstrels of the Ethiopian Highlands, Azmari is a deeply rooted tradition of musical storytelling. Its sonic character is defined by the raw, vocal-like timbres of the single-stringed *masenqo* fiddle or the plucked *krar* lyre, which accompany a solo singer. The form is built on improvisation, with lyrics often employing satire and poetic ambiguity (*sem-ena-werq*) to deliver social and political commentary. Functioning as both entertainment and a vehicle for public discourse in urban *azmari bet* music houses, the tradition persists as a vital, living component of Ethiopian cultural expression.
