Baile Funk

Baile funk names the sound and the scene of Rio de Janeiro's favela dance parties, the bailes, where DJs and MCs drive crowds with funk carioca: pounding 808 beats, looped tamborz茫o drums, chopped samples, and rapid-fire Portuguese rapping and chanting. Rooted in Miami bass and freestyle imports reworked by DJs such as *DJ Marlboro*, the music is built for the dancefloor of the baile itself: short, relentless tracks, call-and-response hooks, and, in later waves, the minimal 150 BPM voltmix and bruxaria styles pushed by producers like *DJ Arana*. It is party music whose identity is inseparable from the favela dances that sustain it.
