Balani Show

Balani show is an electronic dance music created by DJs in Bamako, Mali, for street parties (balani) of the capital's neighbourhoods. From the late 1990s, DJs with sound systems replaced the live balafon orchestras the parties were named for, remixing balafon, ngoni and djembe patterns with drum machines, samplers and laptops at tempos reaching 170 BPM. Mentored by originator *Seydou Bagayoko*, the sound was defined by *DJ Diaki* and *DJ Sandji*, whose cassettes and CDJ sets made them stars of the Bamako party circuit before international labels documented the scene.
