Banda

Banda is the brass-band music of Mexico's Pacific northwest, centred on Sinaloa, in which ensembles of clarinets, trumpets, trombones, alto horns, sousaphone tuba, snare and bass drum — typically thirteen to twenty musicians — play sones, rancheras, corridos, cumbias and ballads. Descended from nineteenth-century military and village wind bands, the commercial form was defined by *Banda El Recodo*, founded in 1938 and titled the mother of all bands, and modernised from the 1990s by technobanda and by romantic vocal bands such as *Banda MS* and *La Arrolladora Banda El Limón*, whose singers brought banda to the top of Latin charts.
