Bass Music

Bass Music

Bass music is the umbrella term for the British electronic dance music that emerged in London in the 2000s, in which sub-bass weight is the organising principle. Built by producers such as *Skream*, *Benga* and *Digital Mystikz* out of dubstep, UK garage, grime and jungle, it favours cavernous low-frequency pressure, half-time or broken rhythms, sparse percussion and soundsystem dynamics over melody or song form. The label later broadened to cover the international wave of dubstep, trap and low-end club music that followed, but its centre remains the UK continuum of pirate radio, dubplates and purpose-built rigs.
