Batucada

Batucada is the percussion-ensemble music of Brazilian samba schools and Afro-Brazilian blocos, in which a bateria of surdo bass drums, caixa snares, repinique, agog么 bells, cu铆ca and tamborims interlocks in dense polyrhythm. Born in Rio de Janeiro's carnival culture and transformed in Salvador, Bahia, where *Olodum* created samba-reggae in the 1980s, batucada is played by ensembles from a dozen musicians to several hundred. Recordings range from percussion-only documents such as *Luciano Perrone*'s "Batucada Fant谩stica" to the studio fusions of *Carlinhos Brown* and *Airto Moreira*; the mestre's whistle and the repinique's calls direct the ensemble in performance.
