Bikutsi

Bikutsi is the dance music of the Beti people of central Cameroon, built on a driving compound-meter pulse traditionally beaten on the ground and on bamboo and bottle percussion, and carried in its modern form by interlocking balafon-patterned electric guitars. First recorded by *Anne-Marie Nzi茅* in the 1940s, electrified by *Messi Martin* and *Los Camaroes*, and taken international by *Les T锚tes Br没l茅es*, it rivals makossa as Cameroon's best-known style. Singing is led by women, in call-and-response, and frank about desire, marriage and social scandal.
