Birmingham Sound

Birmingham Sound

The Birmingham sound is a subgenre of techno that emerged in Birmingham, England, in the early 1990s around the House of God club night and the #Downwards# label. Practised principally by *Regis*, *Surgeon* and *Female*, it is characterised by hard, fast and deliberately unyielding tracks: pounding drum-machine loops, metallic synth tones and minimal variation, with the bassline funk and swing of Detroit and Berlin techno stripped away. Rooted as much in the city's industrial and post-punk culture as in dance music, the style treats repetition itself as intensity, and it became a formative influence on the later Berghain-centred Berlin sound.
