Black Ambient

Black ambient is a form of dark ambient created largely by musicians from the black metal underground, in which the atmosphere of black metal is retained while its guitars and drums are set aside or reduced to a distant presence. Synthesizers, drones, field recordings, church organ, whispered or screamed voices and lo-fi hiss build slow, cavernous pieces concerned with darkness, ritual and desolation. Projects such as *Abruptum*, *Neptune Towers* and *Gnaw Their Tongues* treat the ambient format as an extension of black metal's worldview rather than a departure from it.
