Black Metal

Emerging from the thrash and speed metal scenes of the 1980s, black metal was codified by a "second wave" of Scandinavian artists. The genre is defined by a deliberately raw, lo-fi production aesthetic, emphasizing high-frequency guitar textures achieved through tremolo picking and heavy distortion. Vocals are typically high-pitched and shrieked, eschewing melodic form for raw emotional expression. Its foundational ethos, rooted in individualism and opposition to mainstream religion, shaped a distinct visual and thematic identity that prioritized atmosphere over technical precision, influencing a vast spectrum of extreme music while remaining largely outside commercial spheres.
