Black Noise

Black Noise

Black noise is a fusion of black metal and harsh noise in which the recognizable elements of metal — tremolo guitar, blast patterns, shrieked singing — are submerged in walls of distortion, feedback and tape saturation until texture itself becomes the subject. Songs may retain riffs and structures or dissolve entirely into static; recordings favor extreme volume, clipping and lo-fi degradation. Developed within the black metal underground from the 1990s onward and consolidated as a named style in the 2010s, black noise treats the abrasion and physicality of sound as an end in itself.
