Bleep Techno

Bleep techno was the first distinctly British form of techno, made in Sheffield, Bradford, Leeds and other northern English cities between 1989 and 1991. Producers including *LFO*, *Sweet Exorcist*, *Forgemasters* and *Unique 3* stripped Detroit techno and Chicago house down to minimal synthesizer bleeps, pure sine-wave tones and heavy soundsystem sub-bass, answered by sparse drum machine patterns. The young Sheffield label #Warp# documented the style, whose fusion of machine minimalism and bass weight laid foundations for British bass music, IDM and later developments across UK electronic music.
