Braindance

Braindance is the tongue-in-cheek name coined by the London label #Rephlex# for the melodic, playful wing of 1990s British electronic music that fused IDM complexity with the pleasures of acid house, electro, jungle and vintage computer-game melody. Where much IDM turned austere, braindance producers such as *Aphex Twin*, *Squarepusher* and *碌-Ziq* loaded frenetic breakbeats and analogue synthesizer lines with humour, virtuosity and pop hooks. The term, launched as a semi-serious manifesto by label co-founder *Grant Wilson-Claridge*, became the standard shorthand for the #Rephlex# roster and its fellow travellers.
