Brazilian Classical Music

Brazilian classical music is the concert tradition of Brazil, extending from colonial sacred music to a self-consciously national school that fused European symphonic, chamber and solo forms with Afro-Brazilian and popular idioms such as choro, modinha and samba. *Heitor Villa-Lobos*, its dominant figure, codified the synthesis in the Bachianas Brasileiras and Ch么ros series, while *Carlos Gomes* had earlier won European success with opera. Composers including *Camargo Guarnieri*, *Francisco Mignone* and *Radam茅s Gnattali* extended the national project, and Brazilian concert guitar writing in particular achieved a permanent international repertoire.
