Breakbeat House

Breakbeat House

Breakbeat house was the house-based rave style of Britain in the first years of the 1990s, in which house tempos, piano riffs and diva vocals were rebuilt on sampled funk breakbeats instead of a straight four-to-the-floor kick. It flourished in the brief window before the sound hardened into breakbeat hardcore and jungle: acts such as *Shut Up and Dance*, *Bizarre Inc*, *Shades of Rhythm* and *Altern-8* scored UK chart hits with records that joined club house to hip-hop drum loops, and the early work of *The Prodigy* sits at its harder edge.
