Breakstep

Breakstep

Breakstep is a style of UK garage that emerged in London in the late 1990s when producers replaced 2-step's swung house rhythms with breakbeats and heavy, rolling basslines, discarding the R&B vocal gloss for a darker, more minimal sound. Its founding records are *DJ Zinc*'s "138 Trek" (1999) and the stripped dub versions of *Horsepower Productions*, whose album "In Fine Style" (2002) collected the style's defining tracks. Played at the FWD>> night and sold through Croydon's Big Apple Records, breakstep was the bridge between UK garage and dubstep, and it also fed the early development of grime.
