Brega calypso

Brega calypso is the dance music of Pará, in northern Brazil: the romantic songcraft of brega accelerated by Caribbean calypso rhythm and the virtuoso electric guitar of the guitarrada tradition. Built in Belém's aparelhagem sound-system culture, it pairs electronic drums and synthesisers with *Chimbinha*'s arpeggiated guitar and a frontwoman's full-tilt melodrama. *Banda Calypso*, formed in 1999 by singer *Joelma* and guitarist *Chimbinha*, carried the style from regional parties to become one of Brazil's best-selling acts of the 2000s, and the tag survives on revival records such as *Pabllo Vittar*'s "Batidão Tropical" (2021).
