Brega Funk

Brega funk is a dance music from Recife, in Brazil's Pernambuco state, formed in the early 2010s when the city's MCs and DJs fused Rio's funk carioca with the romantic local brega and arrocha traditions. Its tracks pair a hard, halftime-feeling beat at up to 180 BPM with shimmering MIDI pianos, filtered guitars and the pitched metallic snare known as the caixa, under chanted, call-and-response vocals. Long confined to Recife's peripheral bailes, it broke nationally in 2018 with *MC Loma*'s "Envolvimento".
