Britfunk

Britfunk

Britfunk was the British jazz-funk style that animated the country's soul club scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s: fast, up-tempo funk played by predominantly Black British bands for dancers at all-dayers, all-nighters and jazz-funk nights. Its sound combined American jazz-funk and fusion models with slap bass, tight horn sections, synthesisers and crisp, high-energy drumming. Groups including *Level 42*, *Light of the World*, *Hi-Tension*, *Freeez* and *Shakatak* moved from the underground circuit to the UK charts around 1980–82, before the scene's musicians dispersed into pop, and into the acid jazz movement they directly seeded.
