Broken Beat

Broken beat is the West London electronic dance style that emerged in the late 1990s around the production collective *Bugz in the Attic* and *IG Culture*. It takes the syncopation of jazz fusion, broken into stuttering, off-kilter drum programming derived from drum and bass, UK garage and hip hop, and lays it under jazz harmony, soul vocals and improvisation. Centred on the CoOp club night and labels such as #2000 Black# and #Laws of Motion#, it produced *4hero*'s "Two Pages" as its foundational album and fed directly into London's later jazz and dance scenes.
