Broken Transmission

Broken Transmission

Broken transmission, also called signalwave, is a subgenre of vaporwave built from short samples of old television and radio broadcasts — commercials, station idents, weather channel segments, news fragments and jingles — left fragmented and lightly processed rather than developed into songs. Pioneered in 2011-12 by *Midnight Television*, *Infinity Frequencies* and *Fuji Grid TV*, it simulates channel surfing or receiving a distant, failing signal, producing an eerie nostalgia for media half-remembered. Projects such as *Nmesh* and *CT57* extend the collage approach, privileging atmosphere, texture and lost-media mystery over melody or rhythm.
