Brooklyn Drill

Brooklyn Drill

Brooklyn drill is the New York form of drill music that emerged in Brooklyn in the late 2010s, when local rappers adopted the sliding 808s and dark, minimal beats of UK drill and fused them with the legacy of Chicago drill. Defined by *Pop Smoke*'s baritone flow and the production of *808Melo*, the style pairs sparse piano and string samples with gliding bass and skittering hi-hats, underpinning stark accounts of street life in East New York, Brownsville and Flatbush. It became drill's commercial centre after 2019, carrying the sound to the top of the American charts while remaining rooted in neighbourhood crews and rivalries.
