Brostep

Brostep is the North American variant of dubstep that emerged around 2010, redirecting the genre's weight from sub-bass atmosphere to aggressive mid-range sound design. Its tracks are built around heavily distorted, modulated bass growls and screeches occupying the register of an electric guitar, arranged in dramatic build-and-drop structures at roughly 140 BPM felt in half-time, and mixed for maximum loudness. Popularised by *Skrillex* and developed from the harder British productions of *Rusko* and *Caspa*, brostep became the dominant sound of American EDM festivals in the early 2010s and drew open hostility from dubstep traditionalists.
