Bubblegum

Bubblegum

Bubblegum is a style of commercial pop music that flourished between 1967 and the early 1970s, manufactured by professional songwriters and producers for a pre-teen and young teenage audience. Built from simple chord progressions, repetitive hooks, handclaps and chant-like choruses about crushes, sweets and cartoon romance, it was recorded largely by studio assemblages and television-linked acts — *The Archies*, *Ohio Express*, *The Lemon Pipers* — under production teams such as Kasenetz-Katz. Deliberately lightweight and single-driven, bubblegum was dismissed by the rock criticism of its era, but its melodic economy and producer-led model anticipated later teen pop and left durable standards of the oldies repertoire.
