Bullerengue

Bullerengue is an Afro-Colombian song and dance tradition of Colombia's Caribbean lowlands, centred in towns such as San Cayetano, MarÃa La Baja and Mahates. A lead singer, the cantadora, trades verses with a responding chorus over the interlocking patterns of the alegre and llamador drums, tambora and maracón shaker, while dancers enter the circle in turn. Long guarded by elder women as a vehicle of memory, satire and mourning, the style reached national and international audiences through *Petrona MartÃnez*, *Totó la Momposina* and a younger generation of tradition-bearers.
