Canadian Folk Music

Canadian folk music is the body of traditional and singer-songwriter folk music of Canada, joining settler traditions — Anglo-Celtic ballads, French-Canadian song, Maritime shanties and Newfoundland narrative song — with the contemporary folk movement that followed. Its defining works pair plainspoken narrative writing with regional subjects: the sea, the land, work and departure. *Ian & Sylvia* and *Gordon Lightfoot* carried it to international audiences in the 1960s, *Stan Rogers* made it an expression of national identity in the 1970s, and figures from *La Bolduc* to *Stompin' Tom Connors* anchor its vernacular wing.
