Canadian Maritime Folk

Canadian Maritime Folk

Canadian Maritime folk is the folk music of Canada's Atlantic provinces — Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland's song tradition — shaped by Scottish, Irish, French Acadian and English settlement and by the sea. Fiddles, accordions and kitchen-party ensembles carry jigs, reels and step-dancing, while singers preserve ballads of fishing, mining, shipwreck and emigration. *Stan Rogers* gave the repertoire a modern songwriting voice, Cape Breton fiddlers such as *Natalie MacMaster* and *Ashley MacIsaac* renewed the instrumental tradition, and groups from *The Rankin Family* to *Great Big Sea* carried Maritime song to national audiences.
