Cantonese Opera

Cantonese opera is the operatic tradition of the Cantonese-speaking world, centred on Guangzhou and Hong Kong, in which sung drama in Cantonese is combined with stylised movement, acrobatics, martial display, and elaborate costume and face paint. Performers specialise in codified role types, from romantic leads to painted-face and comic parts, accompanied by an ensemble mixing Chinese melodic and percussion instruments with later Western additions such as violin and saxophone. Playwright *Tong Tik-sang* reshaped the modern repertory in the 1950s with romantic classics written for *Yam Kim-fai* and *Pak Suet-sin*, whose partnership defines the tradition's recorded legacy.
