Canzone napoletana

Canzone napoletana is the classic Neapolitan song repertoire of Naples, Italy: dialect songs of love, longing, humor and emigration, composed from the early nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth and sung ever since. Songs such as "'O sole mio", "Funicul矛, Funicul脿" and "Torna a Surriento" were written by named composers and poets for the Piedigrotta festival and sheet-music trade, then carried worldwide by tenors including *Enrico Caruso*. The tradition is defined by Neapolitan-language lyric poetry, mandolin-and-guitar accompaniment and a bel canto vocal style, preserved as a canon by singers such as *Roberto Murolo* and *Sergio Bruni*.
