Carimb贸

Carimb贸

Carimb贸 is the emblematic Afro-Indigenous rhythm and couple dance of Par谩 in Brazilian Amazonia, named for the carimb贸 drum, a hollowed log covered in hide and played with the hands. Coastal communities of Marapanim and Soure built it from African drumming, Indigenous maraca patterns and Portuguese dance figures, performed by a big drum trio with maracas, reco-reco and banjo or guitar. Stigmatised under slavery and periodically banned, it was codified by mestres such as *Verequete* and *Pinduca*, recognised by #IPHAN# as Brazilian intangible heritage in 2014, and renewed by artists like *Dona Onete*.
