Catalan Folk Music

Catalan folk music covers the traditional music of Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands and the folk revival that renewed it from the 1970s. Its traditional stock includes sardana dances played by the cobla, work songs, ballads and ceremonial music for gralles and dol莽aines, while the revival groups treated this material with the riproposta method, reworking old songs and dances with contemporary arrangements rather than preserving them as museum pieces. Valencian band *Al Tall* pioneered that approach, and singers from *Maria del Mar Bonet* to *Miquel Gil* connect the revival to the Catalan-language song tradition.
