Central & South Asian Folk Music

Central and South Asian folk music spans the village, shrine and steppe traditions of a vast region: the Sufi qawwali and folk song of Pakistan and northern India, Punjabi and Sindhi devotional and wedding repertories, and the nomadic musics of Central Asia, where Tuvan and Mongolian throat singers such as *Huun-Huur-Tu* produce two tones at once. Harmonium, dholak, ektara and dotar accompany South Asian singers including *Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan*, *Abida Parveen* and *Reshma*, while morin khuur, igil and jaw harp carry the Central Asian repertories now heard worldwide.
