Chacarera

Chacarera

The chacarera is a folk dance and song form from Santiago del Estero in northwestern Argentina, and one of the central genres of Argentine folklore. It is danced by couples to a sesquialtera metre that sets 6/8 against 3/4, accompanied by guitar, violin, piano or accordion and the bombo leg眉ero drum, whose interlocking pattern drives the dancers' zapateo footwork. Its sung stanzas, in Spanish coloured by Quechua survivals, treat rural life, love and the Santiago landscape. Codified by *Andr茅s Chazarreta* and the *Hermanos 脕balos*, the form was carried nationally by *Los Manseros Santiague帽os*, *Alfredo 脕balos* and *D煤o Coplanacu*.
