Chamber Rock

Chamber Rock

Chamber rock is the branch of progressive rock that builds its music from chamber-music forces: strings, woodwinds, piano and percussion alongside electric bass and drums, composed with the rigour of twentieth-century classical music. The term is most closely attached to the Belgian groups *Univers Zero* and *Art Zoyd*, founders of the Rock in Opposition movement, whose dark, Bart贸k- and Stravinsky-influenced works earned the description 'chamber music for the Apocalypse'. Later groups from *Thinking Plague* to *Aranis* kept the acoustic core and the written-out complexity, distinguishing chamber rock from symphonic prog's synthesizer-led imitation of the orchestra.
