Chanson Alternative

Chanson alternative is the literary, indie-minded branch of French chanson that emerged in the 1990s as a deliberate counterweight to commercial vari茅t茅s. Led by *Dominique A*, whose minimalist "La Fossette" (1992) is its founding document, and by *Miossec*, *Philippe Katerine* and *Mathieu Boogaerts*, it favors intimate arrangements, oblique or playful lyrics and small independent labels over orchestral grandeur. Rooted in the chanson tradition of Brassens and Barbara yet open to rock, folk and electronic textures, it remains the prestige circuit of French-language songwriting.
