Chicago Drill

Chicago Drill

Chicago drill is the original form of drill music, created on Chicago's South Side in the early 2010s. Its production, shaped by *Young Chop* and his peers, pairs dark, minimal trap beats — minor-key piano and string loops, sliding 808s, sparse skittering hi-hats — with rapping that is flat, deadpan and deliberately unadorned. Lyrics document gang affiliation, block-level rivalries and the dead, in local slang and with named places and opponents, which made the genre both a primary document of Chicago street life and a focus of media and police controversy. Principal figures include *Chief Keef*, *Lil Durk* and *King Von*.
