Chicago House

Chicago house is the original house music, created in Chicago clubs in the first half of the 1980s as DJs and producers extended disco with drum machines, synthesizers and tape edits. Built on a four-on-the-floor kick, offbeat hi-hats, deep basslines and looped piano, synth or vocal phrases, it ranges from the raw, jacking tracks of *Ron Hardy*'s Music Box sets to the soulful depth of *Larry Heard*. Named after the Warehouse club where *Frankie Knuckles* presided, the style was codified on independent labels such as #Trax# and #D.J. International# and became the template for global dance music.
