Chicano Rap

Chicano rap is a subgenre of hip hop made by Mexican-American artists, rooted in Los Angeles and the Southwest, in which English and Spanish — often the caló slang of the barrio — mix over samples of oldies, funk and soul. It began with *Mellow Man Ace*'s "Escape from Havana" (1989) and *Kid Frost*'s "Hispanic Causing Panic" (1990), whose single "La Raza" became an East Los Angeles anthem. Groups such as *A Lighter Shade of Brown*, *Delinquent Habits* and *The Psycho Realm* developed its melodic and hardcore branches, alongside a vast San Diego and Texas underground.
