Chicano Rock

Chicano Rock

Chicano rock is rock music made by Mexican-American musicians, fusing rhythm and blues, blues, doo-wop and rock and roll with Mexican forms — bolero, ranchera, son — and a bilingual, barrio-centred lyrical world. It begins with *Ritchie Valens*, who turned the son jarocho "La Bamba" into a rock and roll standard in 1958, and centres on East Los Angeles, where *Thee Midniters*, *Cannibal & the Headhunters* and later *Los Lobos* built the Eastside sound. *El Chicano*, *Tierra*, *War* and *Ozomatli* carried the tradition across six decades.
