Chillstep

Chillstep

Chillstep is a melodic, downtempo-leaning offshoot of dubstep that emerged online in the early 2010s, replacing brostep's aggression with atmosphere and emotion. Producers such as *Blackmill*, *MitiS* and *Seven Lions* kept dubstep's half-time drums and sub-bass but built tracks around piano, strings, guitars and ethereal vocal samples, with melodies borrowed from trance and post-rock. The style grew through YouTube and SoundCloud rather than clubs, soundtracking study and relaxation playlists; *Phaeleh*'s deeper, garage-inflected variant connected it to the UK bass continuum. Its two foundational albums, *Blackmill*'s "Reach for Glory" and "Miracle", both appeared in 2011.
