Chinese classical music

Chinese classical music is the art-music tradition of China, encompassing court yayue, literati solo repertories and regional ensemble genres refined over more than two millennia. Its emblematic instruments are the guqin zither of the scholar class, the pipa lute, erhu, dizi flute and the silk-and-bamboo ensembles of the Jiangnan region. Twentieth-century masters such as guqin player *Guan Pinghu*, whose "Flowing Water" was placed on the Voyager Golden Record, and pipa virtuosos *Lui Pui-yuen* and *Wu Man* carried the tradition onto the world concert stage without severing its meditative, literary roots.
