Chutney Soca

Chutney soca is the Indo-Caribbean fusion of Trinidad: chutney — the Bhojpuri folk singing of the island's Indian wedding tradition — set to the driving beat of soca, with dholak, dhantal and tassa drums inside a Carnival band. *Ras Shorty I* anticipated the blend in 1974 and *Sundar Popo* had already taken chutney itself mainstream, but the genre was named by *Drupatee Ramgoonai*, whose 1987 album "Chatnee Soca" and 1988 hit "Roll Up de Tassa" opened Carnival to Indo-Trinidadian music. The Chutney Soca Monarch competition, founded in 1996, is its annual summit.
