Corrido

Corrido

The corrido is a Mexican narrative ballad, sung to a waltz or polka-derived accompaniment, that recounts real events: heroes, outlaws, smugglers, migrants and tragedies along the US–Mexico border. Emerging in the nineteenth century and first recorded in the 1920s by singers such as *Lydia Mendoza*, it became the chronicle of the borderlands. *Los Tigres del Norte* transformed it in the 1970s with the narcocorrido, a form *Chalino Sánchez* later made raw and personal, and which survives today in the corridos tumbados of *Peso Pluma* and the sierreño generation.
