Cumbia peruana

Cumbia peruana

Cumbia peruana, known in its classic form as chicha, is Peru's adaptation of Colombian cumbia, created in Lima and the Amazonian cities from 1968. Its defining sound is the electric guitar: melodic, effects-laden lead lines in the hands of Amazonian and Andean migrant musicians, played over cumbia percussion with huayno melodies, surf and psychedelic rock colouring and Cuban guaracha figures. Born in the pueblos jóvenes of Lima's periphery and long stigmatised as the music of the marginalised, chicha became the country's most popular dance music and, through later compilations, an internationally collected psychedelic genre.
