Danish Folk Music

Danish folk music is the traditional music of Denmark, rooted in the fiddle-led dance tunes of the rural islands and Jutland, the ballads collected in the nineteenth century, and a strong culture of communal singing. Its modern history runs through the folk revival ensembles of the 1970s, the virtuoso fiddling of players such as *Harald Haugaard*, and the electronic folk experiments of *Sorten Muld*, who rebuilt medieval Danish ballads over programmed beats in the 1990s. String quartets, accordion bands and young folk collectives now share the repertoire, and Danish folk maintains close exchange with the wider Nordic scene while keeping its own dance forms, including the les lanciers tradition.
