Dark Trap

Dark trap is a strain of trap music that bends the Atlanta format toward horror and despair: minor-key piano loops, music-box figures and funereal synths over cavernous 808s, while rappers trade triplet flows in deadened drawls, hoarse barks or pitched-down croaks. Emerging from the internet underground in the mid-2010s around *$uicideboy$*, *Night Lovell*, *Bones* and *Ghostemane*, it absorbs Memphis phonk sampling, horrorcore imagery and emo confession, dwelling on addiction, depression, death and occult symbolism. Released independently through streaming platforms, it built a large youth following without radio, and remains trap's bleakest commercial offshoot.
